How to organise an amateur volleyball tournament without stress

How to manage a summer volleyball or beach volleyball tournament stress-free. From new FIPAV and FIVB rules to digital platforms, here are practical tips to get on court and have fun.

Until recently, organising an amateur tournament meant filling in endless spreadsheets and chasing participants for registration fees. Today, technology has drastically simplified this process. Digital platforms like Enjore or BookIt allow you to automate schedule creation, manage team payments and update results in real time directly from your smartphone. This solves one of the most frequent problems: managing sudden withdrawals, which used to force organisers to manually redraw the entire bracket just minutes before kick-off.

While summer is the perfect season for self-managed outdoor tournaments, this is also the time when the indoor season is planned. Many local committees, including CSI Milan, CSI Parma and UISP Florence, have already opened registrations for the 2026/2027 amateur championships, with deadlines set between 15 September and the end of October 2026. Furthermore, on 7 August 2026, with Official Communiqué number 2, the FIPAV Territorial Committee of Rome opened registrations for the Mixed Open Championship with a registration cost set at just 5.00 euros per athlete, making access to official volleyball extremely cheap and free of bureaucratic constraints, such as the obligation of a registered coach on the bench.

Le regole del gioco: cosa applicare sul campo

When organising a tournament, establishing clear rules avoids endless arguments on the sidelines. If you opt for classic 6-player indoor volleyball, the standard parameters include an 18x9 m court and the net height set at 2.43 m for men's tournaments and 2.24 m for women's. As for the net height in mixed or amateur championships, the specific value must be checked in the regulations of the individual event, as it varies depending on the organising bodies. Matches are usually played as the best of 25 points, with at least a two-point margin, and any deciding set, the tie-break, is played to 15 points.

If, on the other hand, you prefer the sand with the 2v2 beach volleyball format, the court dimensions drop to 16x8 m. In this case, regulation sets are played to 21 points, while the tie-break remains at 15 points. An interesting aspect emerging internationally concerns the new rules tested by the FIVB during 2026, such as the increase in permitted substitutions for each individual set, which goes from six to eight. This change is designed to make the game more dynamic and fluid, and could soon be adopted in local amateur tournament regulations to allow all squad members to get on court more often.

Come evitare il caos: la gestione della squadra in campo

Match time is sacred, but without a clear organisation of roles and movements, you risk witnessing clashes and misunderstandings. The typical mistake found in amateur tournaments is a lack of communication on contested balls, especially during reception and defence.

To step onto the court prepared and avoid classic positioning errors, here are some practical tips to apply immediately during the warm-up:

  • Court dimensions: Remember that in six-a-side indoor play you have an 18x9 m rectangle at your disposal, while in 2v2 beach volleyball the space is reduced to 16x8 m. On the sand, covering 64 square metres between two players requires a central starting position and constant reading of the opponent's trajectories.
  • The technical skill: The forearm pass. To perform it best, join your hands by overlapping your palms and point your wrists downwards to straighten your elbows. This creates a flat and even rebounding surface on your forearms.
  • The typical amateur mistake: Bending the elbows at the moment of impact with the ball or hitting the ball with the wrists or hands joined in a fist. This incorrect action causes the ball to fly backwards or sideways, ruining the build-up of the play.
  • How to correct it: During pair warm-ups, focus on keeping your arms straight before, during and after impact. Guide the ball by pushing solely with your legs, without swinging your arms upwards.

Dal gioco amatoriale allo scudetto ufficiale

The growth of amateur tournaments proves that the passion for this sport does not fade after adolescence. An extraordinary example of this movement is represented by the FIPAV Mixed Open Championship. In June 2026, precisely from 11 to 14 June in Campobasso, the national finals of this category were held. Crowning themselves Champions of Italy was the Apulian team Specchia, while Fisiolife San Cesario Volley won a prestigious bronze medal.

This proves that even starting from a simple group of friends playing in parks or on beaches during the summer, it is possible to structure oneself and compete in official high-level championships, keeping intact the spirit of sharing and fun that characterises amateur volleyball.

For those who want to take their first steps or simply wish to find a quick way to get everyone to agree on the time of the next match, using dedicated digital tools is the ideal solution. Gathering a group of enthusiasts, defining the teams and getting on court has never been so immediate.
